For future reference, "Seals" is spelled "SEALs". It is an acronym for "SEa Air Land".

Good explanation! For me, it's better to write the phrase "complete" next to the examples "telegraphic", in order to understand properly.

I completely agree! One of my biggest adjustments was getting used to the absence of my beloved serial comma. We use AP, so out it goes.

While you do make excellent points in your post, I think that ultimately the content or communications that you offer to the world in writing MUST always be edited by hand in order to be 100% accurate. Too many people use software programs and spell check exclusively to edit their work, but these programs are inherently flawed and often miss a great deal of errors. Editing should be as important as the actual writing itself. I have written an article about the pitfalls of automated editing and the importance of manual editing. You can read it here: http://www.contentforconversions.com/seo-strategy-editing-your-content/. I am extremely passionate about high quality writing, whether it be an SEO article, a web page, or simply an email- editing is crucial.

Thanks for your perspective, Sally. My Webster's doesn't list "regarding" as a definition. Most the the definitions seem geographical: On all sides of, near, so as to encircle.

I'm still not buying using "around" in place of "about," but thanks again for your ideas.

Bette

I don't think that's an example of misuse. I looked around up in the dictionary, and it seems ok to use it that way. One of the definitions is regarding, as in "There is a great deal of anxiety around the issue of change".

Online resources have many shortcomings compared to print editions. For instance, type in 'hats' in the OED's search box and it tells you there's no such word; type in 'cats' and you're taken directly to the 'catmint' page (because cats-mint is an alternative spelling). More reasons why I won't be throwing away my collection of traditional dictionaries here: http://virtuallinguist.typepad.com/the_virtual_linguist/2010/08/oed-online.html#tp
